I have worked within the field of transfusion medicine in different roles for many years from medical laboratory technician to service manager for haematology and blood transfusion at a central London university hospital. Having gained an MBA I moved to NHSBT to manage the Blood Stocks Management Scheme established to monitor and improve blood supply management in the UK. This was a position that required use of some of the strategic skills I had learnt during my MBA studies.
I attended my first ISBT congress in 1984. In 2004 it was a great honour to be the congress president for the 28th International congress of the ISBT held in conjunction with BBTS which took place in Edinburgh. Through this congress I became more involved with ISBT and was elected to the Board subsequently becoming the ISBT Vice President.
In December 2008 I joined ISBT as Executive Director with responsibility for the effective management of the ISBT Central Office, and working closely with the Board of Directors to deliver the society’s policies and strategy. It’s a great job to have and I enjoy the fact that I am able to connect with so many enthusiastic blood transfusion professionals from around the world.
