Optimal Blood Use in the European Union; The EU Optimal Blood Use project, Launch of Manual and Future Directions
One Day Symposium 10.00 hrs 16.00 hrs
Registration from 09.00hrs
Over the last three years 20 project partners representing 16 EU member states have met to develop a manual to promote the optimal use of blood. This one day Symposium will launch the Manual. The Manual, supported by a website, aims to provide practical guidance for those seeking to improve the safety of the clinical transfusion process and the effectiveness of the use of blood components.
The Symposium will explore the importance of optimising this scarce resource, looking at experiences of other EU countries, and reflecting on how to build a network of transfusion professionals to share information and best practice.
The Symposium is suitable for medical and nursing staff involved in blood transfusion, blood services and hospital blood banks who are interested in quality improvements in the European Union.

DOMAINE Project - European Donor Management
Launching the Donor Management Manual
During the last two years, 18 European blood establishments and 2 organisations related to blood transfusion have joined their forces on donor management in the DOnor MAnagement IN Europe (DOMAINE) project.
DOMAINE is co-funded by the European Union and aims to create a safe and sufficient blood supply, by comparing and recommending good donor management practice. In 2008, the DOMAINE project performed a survey on donor management practices throughout Europe. The survey results served as a basis for writing the current Donor Management Manual.
DOMAINE is proud to launch the Donor Management Manual during this ISBT session and to present its main topics:
- The donor management process
- Donor base
- Donor recruitment
- Donor retention
- Collection
- Donor safety issues
- Multiple-transfused patients
- Special situations
DOMAINE is currently developing a training programme in order to disseminate the information in the manual. The training programme will become available in 2011. The first contours will be presented.
