ISBT Awards

ISBT Presidential Award

On the initiative of the Foundation Transfusion Medicine in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the Council of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) has instituted the ISBT Presidential Award. This very prestigious Award is presented once every two years at the International Congress of the ISBT

The Award is granted to a senior person who has made eminent contributions to transfusion medicine or a related field through original basic or applied research, the practice of transfusion therapy or through a significant educational and/or service contribution to the field. The goals of these contributions and the effect thereof have had a significant input in transfusion medicine. At this Congress, the special ISBT Presidential Award Symposium will be organised on September 5th, at which the selected nominee will present a lecture covering his expertise. Also presentations by other specialists on issues related to the field of the nominee will be presented. In the evening of the day of the Symposium, an invitational gala dinner will be held to honour the winner of the ISBT Presidential Award.

In 2000 the Award was granted to P.L. Mollison (United Kingdom), in 2002 to H.J. Alter (USA) and in 2004 to D.J. Anstee (United Kingdom) and J.P. Cartron (France). The Award winner of 2006 is C.F. Högman (Sweden).

Professor Högman developed preservation fluids (e.g. SAGM) that elongated the shelf life of red blood cells to 42 days. Due to his research, optimal preservation of red blood cells is now standard practice World wide and has made blood transfusion more effective than ever before.

International Women in Transfusion Award

In 2004, for the first time in their collective histories, three of the major transfusion medicine organizations in the world – the AABB, the BBTS and ISBT – were led by women professionals. To commemorate this occurrence, these 3 organizations agreed to establish this unique award to honor women for lifetime achievements in transfusion medicine and science.

Through this award, the three organizations will strive to regularly acknowledge women professionals whose cumulative record – in original research, innovative educational methods or outstanding clinical practice – demonstrates important and significant contributions to the body of medical and/or scientific knowledge or to the understanding and practice of transfusion medicine.

This year the prize is awarded to Dr. Marion Reid from the New York Blood Centre. The award winning lecture will be presented on Tuesday, 5 September, 09.00 – 09.30 hours. (Auditorium)
