50 South African National Blood Service

The mission of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), an association of voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors, is to provide all patients with sufficient safe, quality blood products and medical services related to blood transfusion in an equitable, cost effective manner. A constant challenge faced by SANBS, in addition to other threats to the safety of the blood supply (such as the impact of high HIV infection rates), is to instill a culture of safe blood donation in a previously fragmented community. Effective strategies are consequently in place to recruit and retain voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors. Education is key in the process of acquiring and maintaining sufficient safe blood in the country, as it provides information on who can donate blood, and also on who cannot donate blood for whatever reason (e.g. medical condition, lifestyle behaviour risk, etc). Numerous educational initiatives are employed to ensure that regular blood donors become accustomed to a culture of safe blood donation and to ensure a committed and safe blood donor base for the future. Policies of good governance include participation in blood conservation programmes, supporting other medical organisations and employing the assistance of community-based organisations that share in the commitment to sufficient safe blood in South Africa.

The Western Province Blood Transfusion Service is based in Cape Town, with regional branches in three smaller centers within the Western Cape, and collects approximately 130 000 units of blood per annum, which are processed into cellular products and fresh plasma products. WPBTS additionally has an active platelet apheresis programme, and a fractionation plant where albumin and factor 8 concentrates are produced. The service is a community based regional health organisation formed by an association of voluntary blood donors, dedicated to providing the safest blood products and efficient service to the community, while operating at the highest professional and ethical standards and remaining a viable organisation. WPBTS is a SANAS (South African National Accreditation System) accredited blood transfusion service (No B0001). Our quality management system ensures systematic working methods, ultimately benefiting both blood donors and blood product recipients.
