INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF TRANSFUSION MEDICINE

Introduction

Transfusion medicine is a scientific area which interests many medical specialities using blood and blood components as a therapeutic agent. Using human blood as a therapeutic agent however, has not been standardized and has not got attention in many regions of the world. This is mainly because of educational insufficiency of the health care personnel, and also of the economical and cultural status in different regions of the world. As the interaction among human beings and transportation opportunities are high, usage of safe blood and blood products of high quality carries importance beyond borders. As one of the main functional areas of ISBT, education all over the world for safe and standard blood and blood products should be one of its' main tasks. The level of "Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine" as a science is different in various parts of the world. Educational activities should be planned according to these levels. International and regional congresses are important to discuss many developments in science but not sufficient in order to discuss special subjects in details and to reach the medical professionals in a region. ISBT has a great opportunity to organise courses in different levels as an activity supported by standing committees, working parties and expert panels. This could be considered as an activity of them.

IATM courses

The activities of IATM can be devided into 3 types:
  1. Educational courses. These courses will be planned on the basic subjects of blood banking and transfusion medicine (e.g. transfusion medicine education, donor recruitment, safe blood, transfusion transmitted diseases, blood group serology, transfusion practices and clinical use of blood, developing national blood policy, standards and quality in blood banks, etcetera).
  2. Support to national or regional courses, or Congresses of National Societies. A good relation and collaboration ship between ISBT and national societies and national health authorities is important. National/regional courses and congresses can be supported by offering speakers form the ISBT Consultancy Data Base in Blood Transfusion and Transfusion Medicine, assisting in the structure and the content of the scientific programme, assisting in fellowships, and suggestions for assistance at centres. If quality criteria are met, the ISBT logo can be used as quality mark of the course.
  3. Advanced courses. At least three (or four) advanced courses in a year will be organised on subjects like immunohematological methods, genetics of blood groups, novel methods in diagnoses of transfusion transmitted diseases, viral inactivation of blood components, advanced screening techniques, stem cell research, etc.

Certification

IATM has the intention to provide each participant of a course a Certificate of Attendance. Furthermore we will ask for accreditation from recommended institutes and organisations (by e.g AMA, EHA, UEMS, or other organisations).
