Prize lectures

ISBT Presidential Award

The ISBT Presidential Award, which has been instituted at the initiative of the Foundation Transfusion Medicine in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, sponsors this award. This award will be granted to “a senior person who has made eminent contributions to transfusion medicine or a related field through basic or applied research, the practice of transfusion therapy or through significant educational and/or service contributions to the field. The goal of these contributions and the effect there of must have had a significant input in transfusion medicine.” The ISBT Presidential Award consists of a special medal, a certificate
with the name of the nominee and a prize in cash.

The Board of the Foundation Transfusion Medicine is composed of W.G. van Aken, president, R.F. de Soet, treasurer, H.W. Reesink, secretary general, C.Th. Smit Sibinga, vice-president and P.F.W. Strengers, member.
 
At the ISBT International Congress, a special ISBT Presidential Award Symposium will be organised, at which the selected nominee(s) will present a lecture covering his/her expertise. Also papers by (an) other specialist(s) in the field of the nominee will be presented. In the evening of the Symposium, an invitational gala dinner will be held to honour the winner of the ISBT Presidential Award.

Dr. Slichter will receive the ISBT Presidentail Award on Tuesday, June 10 between 10.00 – 11.30 hours in Ballroom G – L

Jean Julliard Prize Lecture

The Jean Julliard Prize was established in memory of the first Secretary-General of the society. It is reserved for doctors and scientists under 40 years of age in recognition of recently completed work on blood transfusion medicine and science.

The Prize is awarded every two years at the International Congress. This year the 19th prize is awarded to Dr. James C. Zimring for his paper “Unique properties of transfused erythrocytes as inducers of and targets for the immune response”” Dr. James C. Zimring will receive the Jean Julliard Prize on Tuesday, June 10 between 09.00 – 09.30 hours in Ballroom G - L.

ISBT Award

The ISBT Award will be granted to some-one who has done an outstanding contribution to the educational aspects of blood transfusion and transfusion medicine. The award ceremony will take place during the ISBT General Assembly on Tuesday, June 10, 11.45 – 13.00 hours in Ballroom G - L.

International Woman in Transfusion Award Prize Lecture

In 2004, for the first time in their collective histories, three of the major transfusion medicine organizations in the world - the AAB, the BBTS and ISBT - were led by women professionals. To commemorate
this occurrence, these 3 organizations agreed to establish this unique award to honor women for lifetime achievements in transfusion medicine and science.

Through this award, the three organizations will strive to regularly acknowledge women professionals whose cumulative record - in original research, innovative educational methods or outstanding clinical practice - demonstrates important and significant contributions to the body of medical and/or scientific knowledge or to the understanding and practice of transfusion medicine. The awardee will receive full travel support to present an award lecture during the annual meeting of one of the three societies and a prize of 1000 Euro.

This year the prize is awarded to Dr. Cecile Kaplan from GIP-INTS, Paris, France. The award winning lecture will be presented on Tuesday, June 10 from 08.30 – 09.00 hours in Ballroom G - L.
